II. Modest Reward

Settings
The warm summer rain drizzled down. In Aloterra, any precipitation was a rarity, so thousands of people crowded the streets, each enjoying a fleeting moment of happiness. A cool breeze swept through the brunette locks, exposing a pale face. Rai flew beside him in stealth mode to avoid attracting unnecessary attention. Ahead of Lololoshka loomed a tall office building, the tallest in Alt-City, if the radio was to be believed. Surprisingly, he wasn't stopped at the entrance, presuming it was due to the multitude of reports featuring him. The building was quiet; only the clicking of shoes, polished to a shine, disrupted the silence. In the lobby, he was greeted by a graceful lady with shoulder-length brown hair, dressed in a black snug-fitting turtleneck with white inserts that flowed into black leggings. "Hello, you're Commissioner R-700MC, right?" asked the blue-eyed woman, to which Dave modestly nodded. "Great, I'm Mio, the assistant to the chief secretary. I've been tasked with escorting you to him." The girl walked along a long, slightly gloomy corridor, with the commissioner trailing behind. Nerves gnawed at his skull, pierced his veins, and sucked the last drop of blood from his heart, never letting him calm for a second. His blood pounded in his temples, hindering his focus. When Lololoshka momentarily calmed his inner fear, a door loomed before him. He flinched slightly when Mio put her hand on his shoulder. "You know, the chief secretary... he's... nervous, so I beg you, for heaven's sake, don't upset him. Just stay silent like you are now! And good luck..." The door creaked open, pouring light from the panoramic window into the doorway. Lololoshka stepped inside, surveying the space. The office was a spacious room with a large window on one wall, a shelf with records, a golden turntable, a bookcase, and a large desk in the middle where Caleb sat. He was reclining in his chair, legs crossed, his hair, as always, tied in an inconspicuous bun. He was dressed in the typical Aloterra uniform, which surprisingly looked overly handsome on him, accentuating his slender physique. He was frowning at the monitor and loudly tapping on the keys, oblivious to the guest. Lololoshka stood, unsure of what to do next, so he coughed, drawing attention. The chief secretary leaned back from the computer, inspecting the doorway. "Oh, I apologize, Commissioner R-700MC." Caleb stood up and approached Lololoshka, opening the Empire's display. "The Empire is proud of you," he continued, "your settlement is recognized as the happiest and most successful in all of Aloterra. No one doubts your abilities, but..." Caleb paused, and the smile slowly faded from his face. "I find it hard to believe that someone could achieve perfection in a position in just a year." Caleb frowned, peering through the lenses of his surprised Dave, who in turn raised his eyebrows skeptically. "That's why I checked the entire database about you. And here's what surprised me: until this year, there was not a word about you in the database. Nothing about your parents, your education, not even about you. It can mean only one thing." "Excuse me," the commissioner interrupted, "I think the reason for this is my amnesia." The chief secretary definitely didn't expect such an answer, which momentarily puzzled him. "Please continue." "About a year ago, I woke up in Alt-City but couldn't remember anything. When I went to the hospital, they told me that my implant was invalid, so they made me a new one. I still haven't found any information about my past, and I don't remember anything myself." He fell silent, digesting the new information. "Thank you for being honest. I'll fill in the gap in your resume, once again, I apologize. Here's your reward," he said, and a click sounded on the bank account. After bidding farewell, Lololoshka left the building, and Caleb returned to his desk. "Ah, amnesia, I believed you right away." In the Empire, there's a strict document system, and concealing something is simply impossible. But apparently, Dave managed it. Caleb didn't even consider the possibility that the commissioner's words were true.
