Tell me yes, tell me no

Shortly after their birth, every cell already had a place in that world, a raison d'être, a job to do and a determined life span. Only a few of them had the time and/or interest to socialize with the ones who weren't of the same "species", so they didn't know a lot of things about each other.
So, that friendship between a red blood cell and a neutrophil was considered truly unusual.
It was almost impossible to explain how destiny always managed to get them together.
And also hard to understand why the neutrophil was behaving differently when he was alone with her from when someone else was nearby.
It was no secret for anyone that U-1146 was excellent at his job, always kind and helping others, and neither that he kept pretty much to himself and was a bit "serious" compared to his friends and coworkers, but he, too, was capable of making jokes, laughing and doing fun things. AE3803 knew it, but couldn't prove it. Because he was doing these things only where there were just the two of them, for example, while drinking tea or being trapped in the fibrin together.
The delivery girl didn't understand this "change of attitude", but was telling to herself that she didn't have to, that it was enough to just love him. And, well, this was the problem. She loved him, she loved him so much that it already caused her pain.
“Maybe there were heard a few comments,
Maybe finding the right words is too rough,
Maybe you're waiting for a better moment
Or maybe you still are not brave enough.
Sometimes we're so close, other times far from each other
So that even thinking about it is tough.”
A few times she noticed that he was following her at a safe distance, and when that happened, she took out her mirror and a lip balm, pretending to humidify her lips, but in reality making sure with the help of the reflection that it was really him looking out for her safety. In secret. Or, at least, so he thought.
And when the work day was over, he appeared from the opposite direction, faking that he had been very busy with other things. And she that she hadn't seen him.
"Why is he doing this?"
"Tell me yes, tell me no,
tell if there's something between us both,
Explain me your feelings, give me a hint,
Allow me to understand your warmth and your cold.
Tell me yes, tell me no,
tell me if there's something between us both
Let your silence be taken away by the wind
and bring back to me my shred of hope."
She found it romantic and was overjoyed every time she noticed that he was there, protecting her from a distance. And she also felt so special when she woke up from a short nap on a bench and found her beloved neutrophil's jacket on herself. Then, when she met him and wanted to thank him, he, being together with friends, averted his gaze and said:
"Thanks, I thought I lost it."
But when he was alone, he looked her into the eyes, caressed her chin with his little finger and asked her with a sweet smile:
"Did you sleep well?"
It left her constantly wondering what kind of relationship they had. Sometimes it was so warm, but sometimes so cold...
A few times she could swear that the feelings were mutual, but then felt stupid for misinterpreting a neutrophil who was just doing his job.
"Perhaps my love has just made me blind
And your smile has returned to me my light.
Maybe my love is not what you need
Or maybe you’re just afraid to lose me."
And just as she was about to distance herself from these romantic "fantasies", their mutual friend, the youngest neutrophil in the squad, U-4989, told her about that time when an ill-humored T-Killer had hit 1146 in the face for talking too much about her.
She remembered how he had lied to her, telling her that it had been a bacterium, something unimportant, and then asked her about her day.
"So he does talk about me to others?"
"All the time, AE-chan. It's no secret at all that he cherishes and loves you a lot."
The red blood cell didn't understand anything. If he talked about her all the time to his friends, why couldn't he always be like this whether others were watching or not?
"So why is he so different when we're alone?" she asked with her head down.
"Well, he's a bit different per se, it's not easy to understand him. Maybe you should talk to him about it."
She thought about it for a moment, maybe it was just her imagination. Maybe there was no romance at all and she just getting it all wrong.
The days went by, and their closeness was growing more and more. One time they met in a very narrow hallway, and he took her by the hand without saying a word, leading her almost to the end of it. But then, his radar started to beep, and he had to run to work.
"Hakkekkyuu-san..."
"Tell me yes, tell me no,
tell if there's something between us both,
Explain me your feelings, give me a hint,
Allow me to understand your warmth and your cold.
Tell me yes, tell me no,
tell me if there's something between us both
Let your silence be taken away by the wind
and bring back to me my shred of hope."
She was at work and saw him from afar. Remembering their friend's words, she smiled and waved her hand at him... The neutrophil looked around first, making sure that no one he knew was in sight, and waved back, without knowing that this broke the poor erythrocyte's heart. After having walked hand in hand, she had thought that he did have feelings for her as well, that it was, indeed, a romance, an innocent and reciprocated love, but no... it continued being something between a "yes" and a "no".
“Let me help you to get out all of that,
Or simply let me go to forget.”
Her eyes filled with tears, as she took her cart and ran away. It was way too much for her to bear.
She ran and ran, knowing that he wouldn't catch up to her. Or maybe he wasn't even following, since there were other cells nearby.
That meant that he wouldn't show any interest in her.
"Tell me yes, tell me no,
tell if there's something between us both,
Explain me your feelings, give me a hint,
Allow me to understand your warmth and your cold.”
From all her sadness, she didn't notice the bunch of other red blood cells running into the opposite direction. AE got shoved, fell to the ground, and while trying to get up, she saw a bacterium that was about to attack her. Every second of her life flashed before her eyes...
That was the end.
At least this was what she was thinking, until a brave neutrophil arrived and saved her from a horrible death.
The enemy was defeated, and the neutrophil wounded, but not that bad. Not as bad as the heart of poor AE, who was struggling to hold back her tears. The next thing the crowd witnessed was a white soldier putting his pride as a killer aside to hug her.
“Let your silence be taken away by the wind
and bring back to me my shred of hope."
"Forgive me, Sekkekkyuu... I'm not good at showing these things."
"What things?"
"Love..."
“Let your silence be taken away by the wind
and bring back to me my shred of hope…"
